Lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries are the beating heart of any FPV drone. They deliver the burst current a quadcopter needs to punch out and recover from a dive, but they also demand respect. Handled poorly, a LiPo can lose capacity, puff up, or even catch fire. This guide covers everything you need to know to charge, store, and care for your packs safely.

Understanding LiPo Batteries

A LiPo battery is made up of individual cells, each with a nominal voltage of 3.7 volts and a full charge of 4.2 volts. A 4S pack has four cells in series and runs at 14.8 volts nominal, while a 6S pack sits at 22.2 volts. The “C” rating tells you how much current a pack can safely deliver; a 1300mAh pack rated at 100C can theoretically output 130 amps in short bursts. Understanding these numbers is the first step to choosing the right battery for your drone and your flying style.

Choosing the Right Charger

A quality balance charger is the most important safety investment you can make. Look for a charger that can balance each cell individually and supports both storage and fast charge modes. Always charge in a LiPo-safe bag on a non-flammable surface, and never leave a charging battery unattended.

Most chargers have a dedicated storage mode that automatically brings every cell to 3.8 volts. If you will not fly for more than a few days, discharge your packs to storage voltage and keep them somewhere cool and dry.

Safety and Handling

Treat every LiPo as a potential fire hazard. Store packs in a fireproof container or LiPo bag, away from flammable materials and direct sunlight. When a pack reaches the end of its life, discharge it fully with a dedicated discharger or a light bulb, then take it to a battery recycling point. Never puncture a pack, and never solder directly to a cell. A little caution goes a long way toward keeping your workshop and your home safe.

Signs of a Damaged Battery

Watch for puffing, which means the pack has swollen beyond its normal shape. Also watch for cells that will not balance, voltage that drops unusually fast under load, or a pack that gets hot during normal use. Any of these signals means the battery is reaching the end of its life and should be retired. When in doubt, discharge and recycle. A new battery is always cheaper than repairing the damage an old one can cause.
