What You Will Need
The core of the build is a video receiver that plugs into the tablet over USB and decodes your drone or aircraft video feed. Most pilots use a small OTG receiver with an analog or digital tuner depending on their video system. You also need an on-the-go USB adapter, an antenna that matches your transmitter, and ideally a battery bank to keep the tablet charged during long sessions.
Check that your tablet supports USB OTG before buying anything. Most recent Android tablets do, but older budget models may not, and the whole build depends on it.
Setting Up the OTG Receiver
Plug the receiver into the OTG adapter and connect it to the tablet. Power and Mounting
A tablet running video decoding drains its battery quickly, so attach a power bank and a short cable. Mount the tablet, receiver, and antenna on a tripod or a lightweight rig so the antenna sits high and stable. A simple phone clamp plus a small tripod is often all you need, and it keeps your hands free for the transmitter.
Choosing the Right Video System
Your receiver must match the video system on your aircraft. Analog systems tune in with a simple channel scan and work with almost any receiver. Digital systems such as DJI, Walksnail, and HDZero each use their own protocols, so the tablet app and receiver must support your specific system. Verify compatibility before you buy, because a digital video feed will not display on an analog receiver and vice versa.
For a first ground station, analog is the easiest and cheapest route. The receivers are inexpensive, latency is low, and the channel-scan workflow is forgiving. You can always upgrade to a digital receiver later once you settle on a video ecosystem that fits your long-term flying style.
Field Tips
Reduce screen brightness only enough to see clearly, and use a sunshade if you fly outdoors. Keep the receiver and antenna away from metal surfaces, and perform a quick range test on the ground before launching. If the feed stutters, reposition the antenna or move to higher ground rather than chasing software settings.
