Li-Ion vs LiPo Battery Packs for Long Range FPV Flight
The Battery Trade-Off
Every FPV pilot eventually faces this question: do I want raw punch or maximum flight time? LiPo packs deliver the former — 100C+ burst ratings that let a 5-inch quad pull 120 amps through a power loop without sagging. Li-Ion packs offer the latter — energy densities of 250+ Wh/kg compared to LiPo’s 150 Wh/kg. For long-range cruising, that translates to 20+ minutes of flight instead of 5.
Li-Ion: The Long-Range Champion
Li-Ion packs are built from 18650 or 21700 cylindrical cells wired in series. The most popular cell for FPV is the Samsung 50S (5000mAh, 25A continuous) or the Molicel P45B (4500mAh, 45A continuous). A 6S1P pack made from Molicel P45Bs weighs around 420g and delivers 4500mAh — roughly 50% more capacity than a typical 1300mAh 6S LiPo at a similar weight. The catch: current delivery. A P45B can sustain 45A, but try pulling 80A through it and voltage sags below 3.0V per cell instantly. Li-Ion packs are for cruising at 5-15A, not for freestyle.
LiPo: Still Unmatched for Freestyle and Racing
For aggressive flying, LiPo is still king. A modern 6S 1300mAh pack from CNHL or Tattu can burst to 150A without meaningful sag. The voltage stays flat through the entire throttle range, giving consistent power from launch to landing. The downside is weight: energy density means carrying less juice for the same grams. For a sub-250g 4-inch build running Li-Ion, you can fly for 25 minutes. Swap in a LiPo of the same weight and you get 7 minutes of hard acro — different tools for different missions.
Building Your Own Li-Ion Pack
Many long-range pilots build their own packs. You need: a spot welder (the $40 SUNKKO models work), pure nickel strip (0.15mm x 8mm), quality 18650 or 21700 cells from a trusted supplier (never Amazon or eBay — use LiIonWholesale or 18650BatteryStore), a balance lead, and an XT60 connector. Match cell voltages within 0.05V before welding. The series connections carry full pack current, so double up nickel strips for anything above 30A. After building, wrap the pack in fish paper then a final layer of PVC heat shrink. Label it with capacity and date. A spot-welded pack is more durable than a spring-contact holder and eliminates a common failure point.
Smart Battery Technology
The newest development in the space is smart batteries with integrated battery management systems. HEQUAV’s NOVA smart battery line includes cell-level voltage monitoring, cycle counting, and automatic storage discharge — features that were previously only available on DJI enterprise drones. For long-range FPV, a smart battery that self-discharges to storage voltage after 48 hours is a genuine safety upgrade. No more finding a puffed pack because you forgot to storage-charge after last weekend’s session.
Which One Should You Fly?
If you fly long-range — 5km out, mountain surfing, endurance cruising — build a Li-Ion pack. The extra flight time transforms what you can do. If you fly freestyle, race, or cinematic proximity, stick with LiPo. Many pilots keep both: a LiPo for the first 3 packs of aggressive warmup, then a Li-Ion for the sunset cruise back home.
