Lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries are the beating heart of every FPV drone, delivering the explosive current that makes acrobatic flight possible. They are also the most dangerous component on your workbench. A punctured, overcharged, or improperly stored LiPo can vent flames and smoke in seconds. The good news is that LiPo accidents are almost entirely preventable with a handful of disciplined habits.

Charging the Right Way

Always charge LiPo batteries with a dedicated balance charger, never a generic power supply, and never leave a charging battery unattended. Set the correct cell count and charge rate — 1C is the safe default, meaning a 1300mAh pack charges at 1.3 amps. The balance lead must be connected during charging so the charger can equalize every cell; this is what prevents one cell from overcharging while another lags. Charge on a non-flammable surface such as a ceramic tile or a LiPo-safe bag, and keep a clear area around the charger in case of a fire.

Storage Voltage: The Most Overlooked Rule

A LiPo should never be stored fully charged or fully discharged for more than a few days. The ideal storage voltage is around 3.8 to 3.85 volts per cell. Storing a pack at 4.2 volts per cell accelerates internal resistance and shortens its life, while storing it near empty risks dropping below the 3.0-volt floor that permanently damages cells. Most balance chargers have a storage mode that automatically charges or discharges the pack to the correct voltage — use it after every flying session.

Parallel Charging: Safe Only With Discipline

Parallel charging lets you charge several packs of the same cell count at once, but it demands strict rules. Only parallel-charge packs that are the same cell count and within about 0.1 volts per cell of each other. Plugging a fully charged 6S pack into a board with a nearly empty 6S pack causes a massive inrush of current as the full pack dumps into the empty one. Always connect the main leads first, then the balance leads, and disconnect in reverse order. Keep total charge current below the board’s rating and stay within view for the entire session.

Inspecting and Disposing of Damaged Packs

Before and after every flight, check each pack for puffing, punctures, or a sweet chemical smell — all warning signs of a compromised cell. A slightly puffed pack may still be usable but should be watched closely; a severely puffed or damaged pack should be retired. To dispose of a dead pack, discharge it to zero volts with a discharger or a resistive load, then take it to a battery recycling facility. Never throw a LiPo in the regular trash while it still holds a charge.

Build These Habits Early

Charge on a safe surface, balance every time, store at 3.8 volts per cell, and never charge unattended. These four habits cost almost nothing and eliminate the vast majority of LiPo-related fires. Treat your batteries with respect and they will deliver hundreds of clean flights; treat them carelessly and a single mistake can burn down a workbench — or worse.
