Understanding LiPo Batteries

A LiPo pack is made of individual cells wired in series, and its voltage rating tells you how many. A 4S battery has four cells in series with a nominal voltage of 14.8 volts, while a 6S pack sits at 22.2 volts. Each cell has a full-charge voltage of 4.2 volts and a minimum safe voltage of around 3.0 to 3.5 volts under load. Capacity, measured in milliamp-hours, determines flight time. The “C” rating describes how much current the pack can safely deliver, with higher numbers meaning more punch for aggressive flying.

Charging Best Practices

Always charge LiPo packs with a dedicated balance charger, never a generic power supply. Balance charging monitors each cell individually and keeps them within a few hundredths of a volt of each other, which is essential for safety and longevity. Charge at 1C unless the pack is explicitly rated for faster charging, which means a 1300 milliamp-hour pack charges at 1.3 amps.
