The Most Dangerous Thing on Your Workbench

Lithium polymer batteries are the reason FPV drones can pull 100 amps through a power system the size of your palm. The same energy density that makes them incredible also makes them hazardous. A single 6S 1300mAh pack stores enough energy to start a house fire, and FPV pilots routinely charge, store, and crash these packs without fully understanding the risks. This article covers the safety practices that every pilot should treat as non-negotiable.

Charging: Never Walk Away

The number one cause of LiPo fires is unattended charging. A damaged cell can enter thermal runaway within seconds, and a parallel charging board multiplies that risk across every pack connected to it. Always charge in a LiPo-safe bag or ammo can with the seal removed. Charge on a non-flammable surface — concrete, ceramic tile, or a metal shelf — never on carpet, a wooden desk, or anywhere near curtains.

Set your charger to the correct cell count and chemistry every single time. Modern chargers from ISDT and Hota have auto-detection, but never trust it blindly. I have watched auto-detection read a deeply discharged 6S pack as 5S, and charging at the wrong cell count is a guaranteed fire. Use balance charge mode for every charge cycle — it keeps individual cells within 0.01V of each other, extending pack life and preventing dangerous imbalances.

Storage Voltage: The Habit That Saves Money

LiPo cells degrade fastest when stored at full charge or fully discharged. The chemistry is most stable at 3.80 to 3.85 volts per cell — what chargers call “storage charge.” Leaving packs at 4.20V for more than 24 hours causes irreversible capacity loss. A pack stored fully charged for a week can lose 5% of its capacity permanently. Do it for a month and you have effectively ruined an expensive battery.

Build the habit: after every flying session, storage-charge every pack you did not fly, and storage-charge any packs you flew down to resting voltage. The ISDT FD-200 discharger and the Hota D6 Pro both handle this automatically. If you arrive home at midnight after a long day of flying, at least plug in your packs before bed — the storage cycle completes in 20-40 minutes and the peace of mind is worth the delay.

Field Charging with LiPo Bags

Field charging from a large LiPo or a deep-cycle lead-acid battery is standard practice for full-day sessions. The same safety rules apply, but with added complexity: wind, dust, and uneven surfaces. Keep your LiPo bag zipped, with charge leads exiting through the designated grommet. Never stack charging packs — if one goes into thermal runaway, the one on top will follow. Spread them out with at least 30cm between bags.

When to Retire a Pack

Not every crashed pack needs to be retired, but there are firm red lines. Internal resistance is the most reliable health metric. Use a charger that measures IR per cell — anything above 15 milliohms per cell on a 1300mAh pack is a warning sign. Above 25 milliohms, the pack is dying and should be retired. High IR causes voltage sag under load and generates heat that accelerates degradation further.

Physical damage trumps all metrics. Any puffing, swelling, or softening of the pack is an immediate retirement. Puffed cells have separated layers inside, creating pockets of gas that can ignite when punctured. Dents and creases in the aluminum pouch are equally dangerous — they can cause internal shorts. If you crash hard enough to bend a pack, discharge it to zero volts using a resistor or a discharger, then drop it off at a battery recycling center.

Disposal Done Right

Throwing LiPos in the trash is illegal in most countries and genuinely dangerous — crushed packs in garbage trucks have caused fires at waste facilities. Discharge the pack completely (outside, in a LiPo bag, using a discharger or a light bulb), cut the connectors off, twist the leads together to create a dead short, and take the inert pack to a battery recycling point. Most electronics stores and hardware retailers accept them for free.

Your Safety Checklist

Print this and tape it above your charging station: charge only in a LiPo bag on a non-flammable surface, never leave charging unattended, storage-charge after every session, retire puffed or high-IR packs immediately, and dispose of dead packs properly. These five rules will keep your workshop standing and your house insurance valid. LiPos are not inherently dangerous — but treating them casually is.
