Every FPV flight controller ships with several flight modes, and understanding what each one does is the difference between a smooth first flight and a frustrating crash. The three you will hear about most often are Angle, Horizon, and Acro, and each one gives the pilot a different relationship with the stick. Knowing when to use which is a core skill that follows you through the entire hobby.
Angle Mode: The Training Wheels
Angle mode is the most stable of the three. When you let go of the sticks, the drone levels itself and holds position using its accelerometer. Tilt the pitch stick forward and the quad leans to a set angle and stays there until you release; centre the stick and it snaps back to level. This makes Angle mode the natural starting point for brand-new pilots and the default for most camera drones.
The trade-off is control. Because the flight controller is always working to return the aircraft to level, you cannot perform flips, rolls, or aggressive banked turns the way you can in the other modes. Angle mode keeps you safe, but it also keeps you on a leash. Most pilots treat it as a stepping stone rather than a destination.
Horizon Mode: The Middle Ground
Horizon mode is best understood as Angle mode with an escape hatch. Around the centre of the stick it behaves like Angle mode, self-levelling and holding attitude. Push the stick toward its outer edge, however, and the drone stops self-levelling and begins to rotate freely, allowing flips and rolls while still recovering to level when you release.
This hybrid behaviour makes Horizon mode a popular transition tool. It lets a pilot practise acrobatic moves with a safety net, because letting go of the stick will always bring the quad back to level flight. The downside is that the behaviour change between the centre and the edge of the stick can feel inconsistent, which is why experienced pilots rarely fly it full-time.
Acro Mode: Full Manual Control
Acro mode, short for acrobatic mode, gives you complete, unfiltered control. The sticks command angular rate directly — push the stick and the drone rotates at a rate proportional to your input, and it keeps rotating until you command otherwise. There is no self-levelling and no position hold. If you let go of the sticks, the drone simply holds its current attitude and keeps drifting in whatever direction it was travelling.
This is the mode every serious freestyle and racing pilot flies, because it is the only mode where the aircraft does exactly what you tell it with no interpretation. It is also the hardest to learn. Smooth coordinated turns, controlled altitude, and precise throttle management are all on you. The payoff is total freedom: big power loops, tight gaps, and a flying style that feels like an extension of your hands.
Pairing Modes with Your Skill Level
Your choice of mode should track your comfort with the aircraft. A photographer who needs a stable platform will stay in Angle mode indefinitely, while a racer has no use for self-levelling at all. There is no single right answer — only the mode that matches what you are trying to do today.
When to Switch Modes
Start in Angle mode to build the muscle memory for basic flight — takeoffs, landings, and simple hovering. Once those feel natural, move to Horizon mode to experiment with gentle flips while keeping a safety net. When you can fly a full battery in Horizon without losing orientation, make the jump to Acro, ideally in a simulator first and then over a soft, open field.
The key is not to rush. Each mode exists for a reason, and spending time in the earlier modes builds instincts that make Acro feel natural rather than terrifying. Most pilots never go back once Acro clicks — but almost everyone needs the earlier modes to get there.
