For years, long-range and freestyle pilots alike leaned on TBS Crossfire as the gold standard for reliable radio control links. Then ExpressLRS arrived as an open-source alternative that undercut it on price while pushing latency and refresh rates to levels nobody thought possible. Today the two coexist, and choosing between them is one of the most common questions new pilots ask.
How Both Links Work
Both ExpressLRS and Crossfire use the 900 MHz band in most regions, which gives them a substantial edge in range and penetration over the older 2.4 GHz protocols. Low frequencies bend around obstacles and pass through foliage and walls far more effectively, which is why both links can hold a signal kilometres out where a 2.4 GHz connection would have long since failed.
ExpressLRS, often shortened to ELRS, is a community-driven project with hardware produced by many different manufacturers. Crossfire is a proprietary system developed and sold by Team BlackSheep. This difference in philosophy shapes everything from pricing to how quickly new features arrive.
Range and Penetration
In real-world testing, both systems deliver more range than almost anyone will ever use, with pilots flying ten kilometres and beyond on clean setups. The practical differences show up in challenging environments — dense urban areas, thick woodland, or deep into a band. Crossfire has a long reputation for rock-solid links at extreme range, while ExpressLRS has closed the gap considerably and, in many back-to-back tests, matches or exceeds it.
Antenna choice and mounting quality matter more than the protocol in most cases. A poorly mounted antenna will handicap either system, so spend as much effort on clean antenna placement as you do on choosing the link itself.
Latency and Refresh Rates
This is where ExpressLRS pulled ahead of everything else on the market. ELRS can run packet rates up to 1000 Hz with latency measured in single-digit milliseconds, giving a feel that is as close to wired as radio control gets. Freestyle and racing pilots prize this responsiveness because it translates directly into tighter, more confident flying.
Crossfire offers solid, consistent latency that is perfectly fine for long-range cruising and most freestyle work, but it cannot match the extreme top end of ELRS. If you are a racer or a pilot who can feel the difference in stick response, ELRS has a real edge.
Hardware, Cost, and Ecosystem
ExpressLRS hardware is dramatically cheaper. A capable ELRS receiver costs a fraction of an equivalent Crossfire receiver, and modules are available across every price point from many brands. This low cost makes it the default recommendation for budget builds and for anyone outfitting multiple quads.
Crossfire commands a premium, but that premium buys a mature, tightly integrated ecosystem with excellent documentation and a very gentle setup curve. Its receivers are known for robust build quality and simple binding. For a pilot who values turnkey reliability over squeezing every millisecond, Crossfire still makes a strong case.
Firmware and Setup Experience
Setup is where the two systems differ most in feel. Crossfire is famously plug-and-play, with polished configuration tools and straightforward binding that takes minutes. ExpressLRS has matured enormously, but flashing and configuring it still involves more steps and a willingness to read the wiki. For a tinkerer this is part of the appeal; for a pilot who just wants to fly, it can be a small hurdle.
Which One Should You Choose
If you are building on a budget, flying freestyle or racing, or simply want the best raw performance per dollar, ExpressLRS is the easy answer. The open ecosystem is huge, the community is active, and the cost per aircraft is unbeatable.
If you want a proven, polished long-range link with minimal tinkering and are willing to pay for it, Crossfire remains a superb choice. Both systems will take you farther than your video link can follow in most builds, so either way you are in good hands.
