Fixed-Wing FPV: Launch Methods, Flight Modes, and Surviving Your First Flight
Fixed-wing FPV flying is a different animal from quadcopters. Where a quad hovers and gives you unlimited time to think, a fixed-wing needs forward speed just to stay airborne — and that changes everything about how you launch, fly, and land. But the payoff is real: far longer flight times, greater range, and the smooth, efficient glide that makes long-range missions possible.
Moving from quads to wings is one of the most rewarding steps in the hobby. The transition is easier if you understand the fundamentals before you throw your first wing into the air.
Launch Methods: Getting Airborne
Hand launching is the most common way to get a fixed-wing in the air. The key is a firm, level throw at a slight upward angle while the motor is already at high throttle. Many pilots use a launch assist mode that applies automatic climb-out, holding the wings level and climbing until you take manual control. A weak, nose-high throw stalls the wing before it builds airspeed, so commit fully to the toss.
For heavier or awkward models, a bungee launcher provides a consistent, repeatable launch. It tensions an elastic cord that catapults the aircraft to flying speed with no risk of a bad hand throw. Bungee systems are especially popular for larger FPV platforms and flying wings that are hard to grip safely.
Flight Modes and When to Use Them
Most fixed-wing FPV pilots fly with several modes on a switch. Manual mode gives you raw, direct control and is the most demanding — there is no self-leveling, so you must correct the aircraft yourself at all times. Stabilized mode, sometimes called angle or horizon mode, self-levels the wings when the sticks are centered, which is far more forgiving for a beginner.
For long-range and autonomous work, many pilots use an autopilot running ArduPilot or INAV firmware. Modes like loiter, return-to-home, and auto-mission let the aircraft fly itself and return if it loses the control link or video. Even if you fly manually, an autopilot with return-to-home is cheap insurance that can save your aircraft from a flyaway.
Surviving Your First Flights
Fly a proven beginner platform, not a home-brew experiment. A durable EPP foam flying wing or a high-wing trainer is forgiving, survives crashes, and glides well. Fly in a large open field with soft grass, well away from people and obstacles, and keep your first flights short and close. Wind is the enemy of a first flight — pick a calm day and avoid gusty conditions until you have real stick time.
Landing is where most wings meet the ground. Plan your approach with plenty of space, reduce throttle, and let the aircraft settle into a shallow glide. Flare gently just before touchdown to bleed off speed. Crashes are part of learning — foam repairs with glue and tape, and every failed landing teaches you more than a textbook ever will.
Choosing Your First Fixed-Wing Setup
Your first wing does not need to be expensive or complex. A durable EPP foam platform with a pusher or tractor motor, a simple FPV camera and video transmitter, and a basic receiver are all you need to get started. Many pilots begin with a bind-and-fly model that includes stabilization, which removes the hardest part of the learning curve.
Keep the electronics simple. A flight controller running INAV or ArduPilot adds stabilization and return-to-home, but you can learn on a basic wing with no flight controller at all if you fly in calm conditions. As your confidence grows, you can add GPS, an autopilot, and longer-range video gear one piece at a time.
