Wind Speed and Direction

Wind speed is the first thing to check. Light winds under ten kilometers per hour are comfortable for most aircraft, while winds above twenty kilometers per hour become challenging for small multirotors and lightweight planes. Direction matters just as much as speed, because a steady headwind slows your aircraft down and a tailwind can push it beyond your control. Always note which way the wind is blowing and plan your launch and landing into the wind for maximum control.

Gusts and Turbulence

A steady breeze is far easier to handle than gusty, unpredictable wind. Gusts cause sudden changes in lift and airspeed, which can rock a small aircraft or push a multirotor off course. Turbulence is worse near buildings, trees, and hills, which break the wind into swirling eddies. If the wind is strong enough to shake leaves and branches constantly, or if you can feel it pushing against you, it is probably better to wait for calmer conditions.

A Pre-Flight Weather Routine

Develop a short routine before every session. Check the forecast, then step outside and feel the wind, watch the trees, and look at the sky for signs of building clouds or changing weather. Estimate wind speed and direction, note whether it is steady or gusty, and think about how it will affect your particular aircraft. If conditions are marginal, fly a smaller or less valuable aircraft first to test the air before risking your best machine.

Cold Weather and Battery Care

Temperature also affects your flying. Lithium polymer batteries lose punch and capacity in the cold, which shortens flight times and can trigger premature voltage sag. In cool weather, keep batteries warm in a pocket or insulated bag until just before you fly, and shorten your flights slightly to leave more margin. Hot summer days, by contrast, push electronics and batteries toward overheating, so give your aircraft a short rest between flights and avoid leaving gear in direct sunlight.
