When you start shopping for a drone or RC aircraft, the first big decision is whether to buy a multirotor or a fixed-wing plane. Both have passionate communities, and both are capable of incredible things, but they excel in very different areas. Understanding the trade-offs up front will save you money and frustration and help you pick the right machine for the way you actually want to fly.
How Multirotors Fly
Multirotors, including quadcopters, hexacopters, and octocopters, generate lift by spinning multiple propellers at high speed. Because they can vary the thrust of each motor independently, they can hover in place, fly in any direction, and rotate on the spot. This makes them unmatched for precision work such as FPV freestyle, racing, aerial photography, and inspection tasks that require holding a fixed position.
How Fixed-Wing Aircraft Fly
A fixed-wing aircraft generates lift from its wings moving through the air, which means it must keep moving forward to stay airborne. This forward flight is far more efficient than hovering, so a fixed-wing plane can carry the same battery for a much longer time. The trade-off is that fixed-wing aircraft cannot hover and generally need more open space to launch and land safely.

A typical 5-inch FPV quadcopter flies for roughly four to seven minutes on a battery, while a similarly priced fixed-wing aircraft can easily stay in the air for twenty minutes to over an hour. Payload and Stability
Multirotors are unbeatable for carrying cameras that need to stay perfectly still, because their hovering ability lets you frame a shot precisely and hold it. Fixed-wing aircraft, by contrast, are always moving, which makes smooth video more difficult without a gimbal and stabilization. However, fixed-wing platforms scale up well for heavy or bulky payloads that benefit from efficient forward flight.
Launch, Landing, and Space
A multirotor can take off and land vertically from a patch of ground the size of a car, which makes it ideal for flying in tight or crowded places. A fixed-wing aircraft typically needs a clear runway, a hand launch, or a catapult for takeoff and a flat area for landing. If you fly in parks, forests, or urban spaces, a multirotor is far more practical. If you have open fields and wide skies, a fixed-wing becomes a joy to fly.
Durability and Maintenance
Both types crash, but they break differently. Multirotors tend to lose arms and propellers, which are cheap and easy to replace. Fixed-wing aircraft usually suffer more damage to wings and fuselages in a crash, but their simpler structure often means fewer expensive electronics are at risk. Beginners often find multirotors easier to fly because of their inherent stability and modern flight controllers.
Cost Considerations
Entry-level multirotors and fixed-wing aircraft are similarly priced, but the cost curves diverge as you move up. A capable FPV quadcopter with goggles, a radio, batteries, and a charger represents a meaningful upfront investment. Fixed-wing aircraft often need fewer supporting electronics, though long-range builds add their own costs in the form of flight controllers and telemetry. Either way, factor in spare parts and extra batteries when you budget, because those ongoing costs add up quickly for both platforms.
Which One Should You Choose?
Choose a multirotor if you want to hover, fly FPV freestyle or racing, shoot smooth aerial video, or operate in confined spaces. Choose a fixed-wing aircraft if you care about flight time, range, and efficiency, or if you enjoy the smooth, gliding feel of forward flight. Many pilots eventually own both, because each one opens up a different kind of flying.
