At its core, a ground station is simply a video receiver with a display, mounted together so you can view your drone’s live feed without wearing goggles. The receiver captures the 5.8 GHz video signal from your drone’s video transmitter, while a monitor displays it. More advanced stations add a diversity receiver with multiple antennas, a digital video recorder, and even a tripod mount so the whole rig can be positioned for the best reception while you sit in the shade.

Choosing the Core Components

The heart of any ground station is the video receiver. A diversity receiver with two antenna inputs is strongly recommended, because it automatically switches between the stronger of two signals. Recording is also a practical safety tool. If your drone goes down out of sight, replaying the last seconds of footage often reveals where it landed and what went wrong. Some DVR modules even overlay timestamps, which is invaluable for logging flights and comparing performance across sessions. Adding a DVR turns your ground station from a simple viewing screen into a genuine flight-recording and analysis tool, all for a very small investment in both money and effort.

Assembly and Field Tips

Start by mounting everything to a lightweight board or the lid of a plastic case, using Velcro and zip ties so components can be rearranged later. Keep the antennas away from the monitor and power wiring to reduce interference, and label every connector so field repairs are painless. A tripod mount under the board lets you raise the whole station for a cleaner signal path.
