LiPo Battery Safety: Charging, Storage, and Care for FPV Pilots
Lithium polymer batteries are the power source behind every modern FPV drone, and they demand respect. A LiPo pack can deliver enormous current in a tiny package, but it can also catch fire if it is charged, stored, or handled incorrectly. Most battery incidents in this hobby are entirely preventable with a handful of simple habits.
This guide covers the fundamentals every pilot should know: how LiPo packs work, how to charge them safely, how to store them, and how to spot a pack that is no longer safe to fly.
Understanding LiPo Basics
A LiPo cell has a nominal voltage of 3.7 volts and a fully charged voltage of 4.2 volts. Packs are labeled by their series cell count — a 4S pack is four cells in series for 14.8 volts nominal, while a 6S pack is 22.2 volts. The capacity in milliamp-hours and the C-rating tell you how much energy the pack holds and how fast it can safely discharge it.
Never discharge a cell below about 3.5 volts under load, and never below 3.0 volts resting. Over-discharging permanently damages the chemistry and can make a pack unstable on the next charge. A voltage checker or the telemetry in your flight controller is your best friend here.
Safe Charging Practices
Always charge LiPo batteries on a dedicated balance charger that monitors each cell individually. Charging through the balance lead lets the charger keep every cell at the same voltage, which prevents one cell from overcharging while another lags. Set the charger to the correct cell count and never charge at more than 1C unless the pack is explicitly rated for it.
Charge on a fireproof surface, away from anything flammable, and never leave a charging pack unattended. A LiPo charging bag or ammo can adds a layer of protection. If a pack puffs up, feels hot, or emits a sweet chemical smell during charging, stop immediately and disconnect it.
Storage Voltage and Long-Term Care
LiPo packs are happiest at a storage voltage of about 3.8 volts per cell. Leaving a pack fully charged for more than a day or two degrades the chemistry and shortens its life, while leaving it fully discharged can permanently kill it. Most modern chargers have a storage mode that brings each cell to the correct voltage automatically.
Store batteries in a cool, dry place inside a fireproof container, and keep them away from sharp objects that could puncture the soft pouch. If you will not fly for several weeks, run every pack through storage charge first. A pack stored correctly can last hundreds of cycles; one stored full or empty will fade in a fraction of that time.
Spotting a Damaged Pack
Retire any pack that is puffy, dented, or has damaged shrink wrap or exposed cells. Physical damage compromises the internal separator and dramatically raises the risk of a fire. If a pack shows a cell that will not hold voltage, or one that charges much faster than the others, it is time to replace it.
Dispose of old packs properly by fully discharging them with a dedicated discharge function and taking them to a battery recycling facility. Never throw a LiPo in the regular trash.
