Build a DIY FPV Ground Station: Antennas, Receivers, and Video Monitoring
A dedicated ground station is one of the most underrated upgrades an FPV pilot can make. Instead of relying solely on the small receiver built into your goggles, a ground station can mount larger directional antennas, add diversity reception, record clean video, and feed a monitor for spectators — all of which dramatically improve range and reliability. Building your own is a satisfying DIY electronics project that pays off on every flight.
What a Ground Station Actually Does
At its core, an FPV ground station is a housing that holds a video receiver, an antenna system, and a way to view or record the feed. In the simplest form, that means a video receiver connected to a monitor and powered by a battery. From there, you can add diversity modules that switch between two or more antennas automatically, a DVR for recording flight footage, and even a video splitter to send the feed to goggles, a monitor, and a recording device simultaneously.
The key advantage is antenna flexibility. Goggles are limited to compact, wearable antennas, but a ground station can mount high-gain directional antennas like a patch or a helical, which you can point manually or via an antenna tracker toward the aircraft for far greater range.
Choosing Your Components
Your receiver and antenna choices should match your video system. For analog systems, a diversity receiver paired with one omnidirectional antenna and one directional antenna is the classic setup — the omni handles nearby flying while the directional antenna extends range in a preferred direction. For digital systems such as DJI, HDZero, or Walksnail, receiver options are more limited, but external antennas and recording still apply.
Power is the other critical decision. A small 3S or 4S LiPo or Li-ion pack with a voltage regulator is the usual choice, sized to run the receiver, monitor, and DVR for several hours. Add a switch, fuses, and a proper power distribution board, and you have a clean, serviceable power system rather than a tangle of splitters.
Putting It Together
The mechanical build is where DIY shines. A hard case or a laser-cut panel mounted on a tripod makes a tidy enclosure, and mounting everything on a single plate with labeled ports turns a mess of cables into a piece of field equipment. Take the time to route cables cleanly, strain-relieve connectors, and label your inputs — future-you will thank you when you are troubleshooting a lost signal at the field.
Start simple and expand incrementally. A basic receiver, monitor, and battery in a case is a working ground station on day one. Add diversity, a DVR, and directional antennas as your needs grow. Each addition builds directly on the last, and by the end you will have a station tailored precisely to how you fly.
