In FPV, your camera is your primary sensory input. A great camera with a mediocre VTX often produces a better flying experience than a mediocre camera on a premium video system. With three major sensor platforms now competing — Sony’s Starvis 2 sensors in analog and HDZero cameras, DJI’s custom sensors in the O4 Air Unit, and Walksnail’s Moonlight system — choosing the right camera has never been more complex or more rewarding.

Sony Starvis 2: The Low-Light Champion

Sony’s Starvis 2 technology, originally developed for automotive and security cameras, brings exceptional low-light performance and wide dynamic range to FPV. Cameras like the Foxeer T-Rex, RunCam Phoenix 2 SP, and Caddx Ratel 2 use Starvis 2 sensors with pixel sizes around 2.9µm — significantly larger than the 2.0µm pixels in previous-generation sensors, capturing more photons per pixel in dim conditions.

The result: you can fly confidently at dusk, through shadow-dense forests, and in overcast conditions where older sensors would show nothing but noise. Dynamic range typically exceeds 100dB, meaning you can see detail in both a bright sky and dark ground simultaneously — the perennial FPV camera challenge.

The tradeoff? Resolution typically caps at 1200TVL for analog cameras. While the image is clean and usable, it doesn’t match the sharpness of digital systems. Where the O4 falls short: low-light performance still lags behind Starvis 2 sensors. The noise reduction algorithms are aggressive, creating a watercolor-like smoothing effect in dim conditions that can obscure fine branches and wires. The 4:3 aspect ratio mode also crops the sensor, reducing effective resolution.

Walksnail Moonlight: The Open-Platform Challenger

Walksnail’s Moonlight kit uses a 1/1.8-inch sensor with a 4K-capable ISP, outputting 1080p/100fps with latency comparable to the DJI O3 (~22-28ms depending on mode). Walksnail’s real strength is flexibility. You can use the same goggles (Avatar HD Goggles X) with the 1S Lite VTX for whoops, the Moonlight for cinematic quads, and the GT for long-range — all sharing the same ecosystem. DJI forces you into their camera-VTX pairing with no cross-compatibility.

Analog Still Has a Place

Don’t dismiss analog. A high-end analog camera (RunCam Phoenix 2, Foxeer T-Rex) paired with a quality VTX (TBS Unify Pro32, Rush Tank) and good goggles (Skyzone SKY04X Pro with SteadyView receiver) delivers latency under 3ms with true glass-to-glass response. For competitive racing where every millisecond counts, analog remains the standard — HDZero is gaining ground, but top pilots still reach for analog at World Cup events.

Analog’s unlimited channel count (no digital bandwidth constraints) means 8 pilots can fly simultaneously without coordination. Digital systems typically max out at 4 simultaneous aircraft in the same airspace before quality degrades.

Decision Matrix

Choose Starvis 2 analog or HDZero if you fly in challenging light, need absolute minimum latency, or compete in large races. Choose DJI O4 if you want the best overall image quality, built-in stabilization, and don’t mind the walled garden. Choose Walksnail Moonlight if you want digital quality with camera flexibility, or if you’re already invested in Avatar HD goggles for multiple builds across different size classes.

Budget tip: a $40 Caddx Ratel 2 (Starvis 2) paired with a $30 Rush Tank Mini VTX delivers 85% of the image quality of a $200+ digital system in good light. Unless you need recording capability or HD in your goggles, analog remains the value champion.
