A desktop CNC opens up a new tier of fabrication: cut carbon fiber frame plates, machine aluminum mounts, and prototype flight controller PCBs from your workbench.
Genmitsu 3018-PRO
The Ender 3 of CNC: $200-300, 300x180mm work area, cuts 3mm carbon and single-sided PCBs. Upgrades: 500W spindle and linear rails.
Carbon Fiber Machining
Carbon is abrasive and conductive. Use diamond-coated carbide end mills at 10,000-12,000 RPM with flood coolant or vacuum dust shoe. Carbon dust is hazardous — wear N95 mask, use extraction. Design in Fusion 360, export DXF, generate G-code with FlatCAM. A 3mm arm takes 15-20 minutes.
PCB Prototyping
Design in KiCad, export Gerbers, convert to G-code with FlatCAM or pcb2gcode, mill isolation traces with 0.1mm V-bit. A custom FC breakout board goes from KiCad to soldered prototype in under two hours — no minimum order, no shipping wait.
Aluminum
3018-class machines handle 6061 for brackets with light depth of cut (0.2-0.5mm) and cutting fluid. For 7075, step up to linear rails and 1.5kW+ spindle.
Desktop CNC + 3D printer = complete FPV fabrication toolkit: print flexible parts, CNC rigid structures, mill custom electronics.
