Long-range FPV flying opens up breathtaking possibilities — mountain surfing, lighthouse diving, and exploring places you could never reach on foot. But building a reliable long-range quad requires careful component selection and meticulous assembly. This guide walks you through building a 7-inch long-range FPV drone that can fly 5+ kilometers with confidence.

Why 7 Inches?
The 7-inch platform hits the sweet spot for long-range FPV. It is large enough to carry a GoPro and a large LiPo or Li-Ion battery, has enough prop disk area for efficient cruise flight, and is still small enough to be portable. 7-inch props spinning at lower RPMs are significantly more efficient than 5-inch props at the same thrust level.
Frame Selection
Your frame is the foundation. For long-range, look for:
- Deadcat or X-configuration: Deadcat (front arms wider than rear) keeps props out of the camera view. X-frames are more symmetric but require more camera tilt.
- Arm thickness: 6mm minimum for a 7-inch. Thicker arms handle the stress of heavier batteries.
- Stack clearance: At least 25mm to fit GPS, receiver, and capacitor comfortably.
- Weight: A bare frame should be under 180g. Popular options include the FR7, Rekon 7, and GEPRC Mark4 7.
Motors: Efficiency Over Power
Long-range motors prioritize efficiency over raw thrust. Key specifications:
